September 1997 - September 2005. My "Bedroom ISP". At one point there were 15 machines buzzing away in my small Wandsworth apartment.

Add the rack of servers in various data centres; starting in Maidstone 1998 with a single machine, then racks at Host Europe Park Royal & finally Pipex Docklands.

End of an era when Micronicos was sold to Andrew Lugg & renamed 1stDNS. We moved on - some faster than others! Times they do go on changing.

Screen-grabs of mrtg & rrdtool machine stats micronicos server performance/usage 2003-2005. wish I'd saved more of these, trouble is when you're being spammed or ddos'd - you don't have the time or inclination to 'photograph' - usually the phone is ringing off the hook with annoyed customers - fix it!

I was fortunate to be hired by Shell Vietnam, the first major Western Company to return to Vietnam after the 1975 victory.

In 1989 I made two Vietnam tours as the on-board Shell Representative for the Seismic Survey Vessel RV 'Geco Kappa' surveying offshore Da Nang, our support base.

Location Vietnam - I loved the land and its people, experienced at a turning point in their history. It was also the last traditional Shell 'in-country' permanent staff foreign service set-up - end of an era for both Vietnam & Royal Dutch Shell.

I'll put everything here to do with seismic, hydrographic & oceanographic works that won't fit elsewhere.

For the uninitiated 'the shooting line' is the (preplotted) survey path for the current survey 'run' of the acquisition boat. In the old days they dropped dynamite overboard as an energy source - hence the 'shooting'. Was dangerous then - merely noisy now.
